UPSC Mains Answer Writing & Evaluation Programme

This 30-day programme develops the core competencies required for effective UPSC Mains answer writing.

Rather than focusing merely on writing answers, it follows a progressive approach: decode the question, understand the demand, structure the answer, develop arguments, add multiple dimensions, evaluate critically, and present a balanced, Mains-ready answer.

How each day works

A fixed daily cycle so that practice, evaluation and improvement happen together.

• 9:00 AM — Question of the Day, for daily answer-writing practice
• 1:00 PM — Reminder, to encourage participation and completion
• 8:00 PM — Model answer and self-evaluation, to identify gaps
• Next day — Answer of the Day, one well-written answer showcased with faculty annotations covering the strengths of the introduction, quality of arguments, use of examples and data, missing dimensions, structural improvements and quality of conclusion

What is expected of you

Attempt the question independently before referring to any study material. Adhere strictly to the word limit and finish within the suggested time. Do not consult model answers, study material or AI tools while attempting. Focus on the demand of the question, structure, analysis and presentation, then evaluate your answer against the framework provided.

The four stages

• Stage I · Days 1–6 — Building the foundation: question demand, directive words, introductions, body structure, multi-dimensional thinking, conclusions
• Stage II · Days 7–18 — Developing the 10/15-marker: balanced arguments, counter-arguments, constitutional and legal dimensions, opportunity–challenge analysis, interdisciplinary and multi-sectoral analysis, critical examination
• Stage III · Days 19–24 — UPSC-level value addition: security and strategic dimensions, technology and governance, defence and indigenisation, international relations, disaster management, environmental governance
• Stage IV · Days 25–29 — UPSC Mains mode: no new technique, only independent application of everything built so far
• Day 30 — Final Mini Mains Test: 30 minutes, 25 marks, two questions

By Day 30 you should be able to

Decode a question and identify its demand and directive. Plan before writing, generating relevant dimensions rather than reproducing memorised content. Structure a logical introduction, body and conclusion. Connect issues across governance, economy, society, environment, security, technology and international relations. Present multiple perspectives instead of taking extreme positions. Add value with examples, data, constitutional provisions, reports, schemes and case studies. Write within the word limit and manage your time. Evaluate your own answer, learn from peer answers, and approach a Mains question with greater clarity and analytical maturity.
