Is PSIR the Right Optional for You? An Honest Overview

Political Science & International Relations (PSIR) is one of the most popular UPSC optionals — but popularity is not a reason to choose it. Here is an honest overview.

The syllabus at a glance

PSIR has two papers: political theory & Indian government (Paper I) and comparative politics & international relations (Paper II).

Overlap with GS

  • GS Paper II — polity, governance, IR
  • Essay — political and philosophical themes
  • Interview — current affairs framing

This overlap is real leverage: your optional preparation directly strengthens three other parts of the exam.

Who should choose it

Choose PSIR if you enjoy argument, can write analytically, and are comfortable engaging with theory. Avoid it if you prefer purely factual subjects.

The best optional is the one you can write analytically about under time pressure — not the one with the highest reported success rate.
